Online Professional Learning Project for BC Libraries

The North East, North Central and Kootenay Library Federations have partnered to deliver the Online Professional Learning Project for BC libraries. We acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Education.

In 2016, the Library Certificate in Building Leadership Capacity through Management Skills 6-course program had 21 library directors and staff members from BC Public Libraries participate. The complementary staff courses offered in the same year were Managing Time & Priorities, Developing Personal Resilience and Introduction to Project Management. A total of 64 participants from public, K-12 and post-secondary libraries completed the courses. All courses were 4-weeks in length and delivered online by Royal Roads University.

The project objective was to build the capacity within our libraries for both management and staff to embrace and manage change, apply innovation and creativity, and manage the daily demands of emerging trends in library services to best meet the needs of the communities they serve.

In addition to the online courses, a tool to support ongoing staff development was created. The BC Libraries Staff Competencies Learning Matrix is a no-frills, functional site that displays well on all browsers as well as in a mobile environment. It offers a  competencies database that has learning opportunities attached to specific skills. The matrix can be accessed at www.bclibslearn.ca
